Berardo Collection Museum
The Berardo Collection Museum was opened in 2007 in the Exhibition Centre of Centro Cultural de Belém. The collection of this recent museum has about 1000 pieces from more than 500 artists, and belongs to Joe Berardo, a successful businessman from Madeira and a passionate collector of modern and contemporary art. The purpose of this museum is to show the development of the 20th century fine arts, until nowadays. Through its exhibitions (permanent and temporary) are presented, on a very didactic way, the major art movements of the modern and contemporary international scene (especially the European and American art). Berardo Collection Museum closes on mondays and is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. (last visit begins at 6.30 p.m.). The entrance is free.
It has over 70 artistic currents that allow endless opportunities of presentations and renewed interpretations of contemporary art, not only by the richness of its contents, but also by the constant acquisition of new art pieces. The collection’s highlights are from Pablo Picasso, Mondrian, Francis Bacon, Andy Warhol, Yves Klein, Willem de Kooning, Francesco Clemente, Jenny Holzer, Sol LeWitt, Richard Serra, Henry Moore, Fernando Botero, Christian Boltanski, Mario Merz, Bill Viola, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Paula Rego, Pedro Cabrita Reis, among others. The Museum Shop has excellent publications related to modern and contemporary art (in addition to other nice products).
