Rei D. CarlosSituated in Cascais upper centre, the King Carlos Sea Museum, pays homage in its name to the penultimate Portuguese King, a great oceanographer and sea lover.

In 1992, the Municipality of Cascais inaugurated this museum dedicated to the sea, and gave it the king’s name as recognition for his contribution on the promotion of the village and its coast.

Here we may find six exhibitions related to sea:

Museu do Mar1- “D. Carlos and the Oceanographic Science”: shows the oceanographic work carried out by the monarch with the various expeditions made aboard his personal yacht.

2- “The Sea and the Origin of Life”: an exhibition of natural history that includes pre-historic and paleontological collections (sea fossils).

3- “People of the Sea and Fisheries”: the traditions and culture of the Cascais fishermen, as the typical clothes; models of boats; fishing materials, etc.

Museu do Mar4- “Cascais and the Shipwreck Route”: shipwrecks history and underwater archaeology (recovered treasures along the coast that includes pieces from Roman period to present).

5- “Biodiversity”: collections of Ichthyology (fishes), Mammalogy (mammals), Ornithology (marine birds); Malacology (shells), Herpetology (aquatic reptiles and amphibians).

6- “Seafaring and Navigation” replicas of all types of boats and nautical instruments of navigation support.
