Lisbon Spirit – Beyond the Tram N. 28
The tour Beyond the Tram N. 28 takes us to the oldest neighbourhoods of Lisbon, focusing on the hill where the town was born. The tour starts in Camões square, at the top of Chiado. From there, participants go on board of the iconic tram 28, heading to St. George’s Castle hill. Once in there, it’s time to walk to the oldest market in town: Feira da Ladra flea market (it only takes place on tuesdays and saturdays). Taking the tram rails as the leitmotif, the trip proceeds through historical sites as the Lisbon Cathedral and São Vicente de Fora church.
The tour then stops in the National Pantheon, whose unique dome marks the city skyline and where some of the most notorious portuguese personalities are buried. The last stop is the old and labyrinthine Alfama. With the help of a professional guide, it’s time to know the typical ambience of this popular neighbourhood. In the background we listen to fado, Lisbon’s musical expression par excellence and said to be born in Alfama’s alleys, where people still play and sing it genuinelly. This tour takes place every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and lasts four hours. The enrollment price includes the tram ride.
